New Poems in Bihar-based Das Literarisch
It's been so many years since I was sending poems out into the world that I'd pretty much forgotten the pleasure of having work accepted in unexpected places. Here are four newish poems that have been published in an Indian magazine with a German title:
Das Literarisch is a print and online title from Shaheen: The Literature Foundation, based in Bihar. Its editor-in-chief, S. M. Yahiya Ibrahim, welcomes poetry and critical and scholarly contributions. If you're interested you can find out more here.
As for the poems themselves:
'The Sawhorse' is a few years old now, and probably ought to be dedicated to Janice Fitzpatrick Simmons whose Donegal garden held the titular item. Really, though, it's an early and gentle contemplation of a world on its way to post-humanity.
'Umm Kulthum' deals with the great diva of the Arab world - the setting is a Moroccan shebeen, where the clientele included their Irish guests in a celebration of the singer while the middle east continued its long catastrophe.
'An Irish Barman Foresees his Death' remembers an incident from my London stint. I'm not sure how funny it's meant to be.
And 'A Question About Fog' takes a childhood memory in, I think, the same tonal and thematic direction as 'Sawhorse'.
